On 3 October 2026, China News Service reported that a Shandong Airlines all-cargo flight took off from Hefei Xinqiao International Airport for Qingdao, officially opening the Hefei–Qingdao freighter route. Each round trip has a payload of about 40 tonnes, and one to two flights a day are planned from Hefei.
The route was developed by Hefei Aviation Investment and focuses on high-value goods such as integrated circuits, auto parts and cross-border e-commerce shipments. Hefei is one of China's planned international air cargo hubs.
The domestic trunk route links with Qingdao Jiaodong Airport's established freighter network to Japan and South Korea, so Hefei cargo can transfer quickly in Qingdao for those markets. China News Service says this fills a gap in direct Hefei–Japan/Korea freighter capacity.
Qingdao Daily (Guanhai News) reported the same day that the flight uses a Boeing 737-800 converted freighter (B738-BCF) and that Qingdao-origin cargo can connect via Hefei to Middle East and SCO-region destinations. GMT Eight added on 7 October that Qingdao Airport now has 12 cargo routes to 12 domestic and international cities, averaging more than 74 flights a week.
