China News Service reported on 16 October 2026, citing the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), that SAMR, acting as the Standardization Administration of China, has approved and published the mandatory national standard GB 36672-2026, Safety Requirements for Lithium-ion Batteries Used in Electric Motorcycles and Electric Mopeds. It will take effect on 1 July 2027.
SAMR worked with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to update the standard as lithium-ion batteries have become widely used in China's fast-growing electric motorcycle industry. The standard sets out safety technical requirements and test methods for these batteries.
According to the report, the standard has three main features. First, it optimises safety assessment at three levels, the battery cell, the battery pack and the battery system, with clearer requirements at each level and better links between them. Second, it widens test coverage to reflect real use, such as low-temperature charging, impact and thermal runaway, adding tests for heating after low-temperature cycling, crush, handle strength, thermal propagation, flame retardancy and marking. Third, it defines rules for determining what counts as the same type of product and standardises test procedures and pass criteria, addressing past inconsistency in industry testing.
With this revision, the earlier recommended standard becomes mandatory. SAMR says the standard will provide technical support for product testing, quality supervision and compliant industry development.
