Maersk sets new peak season surcharges: China and Hong Kong to Kenya from 19 Oct, Asia to Oceania from 1 Nov

Container News (5 Oct 2026) reports that Maersk will apply a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of US$950 per 20ft and US$1,900 per 40ft or 45ft on non-SPOT bookings from China and Hong Kong to Kenya from a price calculation date of 19 October 2026. From 1 November, a PSS on dry boxes from Asian origins including China will be US$500 per 20ft and US$1,000 per 40ft to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, and US$300 per 20ft and US$600 per 40ft to New Zealand and listed Pacific islands.

On 5 October 2026, Container News reported that Maersk has announced Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) updates on several trades, taking effect on different dates in October and November 2026. Two of them cover cargo from China.

China and Hong Kong to Kenya: from a price calculation date (PCD) of 19 October 2026, the PSS is US$950 per 20ft, US$1,900 per 40ft and US$1,900 per 45ft container. It applies to non-SPOT bookings, does not apply to SPOT bookings, and stays in effect until further notice.

Asia to Oceania: from a PCD of 1 November 2026, Maersk will add a PSS on dry containers. To Australia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands it is US$500 per 20ft dry and US$1,000 per 40ft dry or 40ft high cube. To New Zealand, Fiji, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna and Samoa it is US$300 per 20ft and US$600 per 40ft dry or high cube.

The Oceania origin scope includes China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, South Korea, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar, Mongolia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Taiwan and Vietnam. Buyers planning Q4 replenishment for these markets can use the dates to time bookings and budget freight.

Huanghua Port launches its first direct China-Europe train to Duisburg: 118 containers, about 20 days, sea-rail link from Ningbo

Hebei Daily (via People's Daily Online, 5 Oct 2026) reports that Huanghua Port's first direct China-Europe train to Duisburg, Germany has set off with 118 containers, mainly auto parts. The train runs about 10,719 km via Shijiazhuang International Dry Port and takes about 20 days. Part of the cargo arrived from Ningbo Port by sea and switched to rail at Huanghua, which the operator says saves nearly 20 days compared with traditional sea freight.

Wenzhou opens southern Zhejiang's first direct container line to West Africa, cutting transit time by about one third

Guangming Daily (3 Oct 2026) reports that on 1 October the container ship GUO YUN YUAN JING left Wenzhou Port's Zhuangyuan'ao terminal for Takoradi in Ghana, opening southern Zhejiang's first direct trade line to West Africa. The planned rotation is Rizhao, Wenzhou, Takoradi (Ghana) and Boffa (Guinea), with two sailings a month. Cargo previously had to transship via Shanghai or Ningbo and took at least 50 days, and the direct line cuts transit time by about one third.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port runs near full capacity through Golden Week: Chuanshan expects 245,000 TEU for 1-7 Oct

CCTV (via Beijing Daily, 5 Oct 2026) reports that Ningbo-Zhoushan Port kept cranes working day and night over the National Day holiday. The Chuanshan port area expects 60 to 70 vessel calls and about 245,000 TEU from 1 to 7 October, roughly level with the same period of 2025, with average daily handling above 35,000 TEU. In the first eight months of 2026 the port handled 30.4 million TEU, up 6.1% year on year, and it now runs more than 300 routes to over 700 ports.

Yantian Port sets China single-ship record: 28,684 TEU handled on HAMBURG EXPRESS during Golden Week

Shenshi News (via ifeng, 4 Oct 2026) reports that on 2 October Shenzhen's Yantian Port completed 28,684 TEU of loading and discharge on HAMBURG EXPRESS, a 24,000 TEU class ship of nearly 400 m on the Gemini Cooperation AE1 Europe service. It is a new single-ship record for Yantian and for any port in China, beating the 25,872 TEU Yantian record set by ELEONORA MAERSK on 20 July. Up to 9 quay cranes worked the ship at once, and customs, maritime and border teams stayed on duty through the holiday
