On 3 October 2026, Container News reported that Maersk will revise the trigger weight for its Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS) on shipments from Far East Asia to Germany and Poland.
From a price calculation date of 19 October 2026, the US$400 surcharge will apply to all types of 20ft equipment with a Verified Gross Mass above 25 metric tonnes. VGM is the combined weight of the cargo, dunnage and bracing plus the container tare weight.
For other North European countries the trigger is unchanged at more than 28 metric tonnes, effective 30 September 2026, as set in Maersk's 21 September advisory for Far East Asia to North Europe. The surcharge is the same US$400 per 20ft box.
In practice, 20ft containers to Germany and Poland weighing between 25 and 28 tonnes will now attract the surcharge on Maersk, while the same weight to other North European ports will not. Importers of heavy goods from China should review weights on bookings that price on or after 19 October.
