Wenzhou opens southern Zhejiang's first direct container line to West Africa, cutting transit time by about one third

Guangming Daily (3 Oct 2026) reports that on 1 October the container ship GUO YUN YUAN JING left Wenzhou Port's Zhuangyuan'ao terminal for Takoradi in Ghana, opening southern Zhejiang's first direct trade line to West Africa. The planned rotation is Rizhao, Wenzhou, Takoradi (Ghana) and Boffa (Guinea), with two sailings a month. Cargo previously had to transship via Shanghai or Ningbo and took at least 50 days, and the direct line cuts transit time by about one third.

On 3 October 2026, Guangming Daily reported that at 08:20 on 1 October the Liberian flagged container liner GUO YUN YUAN JING completed all Wenzhou Customs formalities and left the Zhuangyuan'ao port area of Wenzhou Port for Takoradi in Ghana. This marks the start of southern Zhejiang's first direct foreign trade line to West Africa.

The first sailing carried small film blowing machines, clothing and hardware made in Wenzhou, along with small commodities from the Jinhua and Yiwu hinterland. The line is planned to run twice a month on a rotation of Rizhao, Wenzhou, Takoradi (Ghana) and Boffa (Guinea), and will gradually extend to more West African trading ports.

Before the launch, goods for West Africa had to transship via hub ports such as Shanghai and Ningbo, with a total journey of at least 50 days. With the direct line, transit time can be shortened by about one third, according to the report.

The paper says the line opens a faster sea route for southern Zhejiang as well as parts of Fujian and Jiangxi. Wenzhou Customs set up a full process clearance support mechanism for the new route, with dedicated staff tracking vessel movements and guiding declarations, so the ship could depart with zero delay.
