On 13 October 2026, the smart electric container ship Suigang Dianhang 02 left Guangzhou Port's Nansha Phase III terminal for Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT), carrying furniture, household goods and other cargo made in Guangdong. China News Service reports that this marks the formal launch of the first zero-carbon container route between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. CCTV carried the same news.
The Suigang Dianhang series are the first smart electric inland container ships in South China. Each can carry 240 TEU and recharges through containerised battery packs that are either swapped by crane or charged directly, which addresses range limits. Onboard digital systems monitor energy use, equipment maintenance and ship-to-shore coordination.
Each vessel is expected to cut more than 550 tonnes of carbon emissions a year and about 19,000 tonnes over its lifetime. The route runs within Guangzhou Port's Shuttle Bus barge brand, a fleet of more than 10,000 TEU that has opened over 70 feeder lines over 20 years, serving more than 20 cities including Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Wuzhou and Guigang.
For importers using Hong Kong as a consolidation or transshipment hub for South China goods, the electric barge link offers a low-emission first leg from Nansha. Ask your forwarder about schedules, capacity and whether emissions data can be provided for your shipments.
