Shipping Gazette: GBA port groups launch cooperative initiative on routes, corridors and smart ports

At the 2026 Ocean Centre City Forum port session, Shenzhen Port Group with Hutchison Ports, China Merchants Port, Guangzhou Port Group and Modern Terminals issued a Greater Bay Area ports cooperative initiative, Shipping Gazette reported on 28 October. Priorities include coordinated port layout, liner interconnectivity, shared hinterland corridors, green shipping corridors and smart-port builds to strengthen Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou hubs.

Shipping Gazette reported on 28 October 2026 that at the 2026 Ocean Centre City Forum's Port and Shipping Forum, leading Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area port enterprises jointly launched the Cooperative Initiative on Coordinated Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Ports.

Participants named in the report include Shenzhen Port Group, Hutchison Ports, China Merchants Port, Guangzhou Port Group and Modern Terminals. The initiative focuses on port layout coordination, shipping-route interconnectivity, shared corridor resources, green shipping corridors and smart port development, with the stated aim of raising the cluster's global competitiveness and reinforcing Hong Kong as an international shipping centre alongside Shenzhen and Guangzhou as international shipping hubs.

Shenzhen Port Group hosted the forum during the China Ocean Economy Expo under the theme of open cooperation, coordinated resilience and green intelligence. More than 100 representatives from think tanks, industry leaders and specialists took part. The report says the initiative marks a move from case-by-case business cooperation toward more institutionalised coordination on function split, liner network links, hinterland corridor sharing and smart-port technology.

Forum consensus, as summarised by Shipping Gazette, covered three priorities: advancing Greater Bay Area port and shipping collaboration into a stronger world-class cluster; accelerating green and smart port upgrades; and supporting stable international supply chains so Chinese manufacturing can move overseas efficiently. Shenzhen Port Group said it will keep deepening regional port cooperation and hub functions.
