Drewry's World Container Index (WCI), assessed on Thursday 15 October 2026, rose 3% to $4,485 per 40ft container, mainly because of higher rates on the Asia-Europe trade.
Asia-Europe: Shanghai to Rotterdam increased 6% to $3,522 per 40ft and Shanghai to Genoa increased 7% to $3,945. This is the first weekly rise on the route after 13 consecutive weeks of decline. Drewry notes that two blank sailings are announced for next week, down from six this week, and that resumed Suez Canal transits are adding capacity. Carriers are seeking FAK rates of $4,500 to $4,800 per 40ft from 19 October, but Drewry says implementation is uncertain given the extra capacity and expects rates to stay stable next week.
Transpacific: Shanghai to Los Angeles rose 3% to $7,884 per 40ft, while Shanghai to New York fell 1% to $10,075. Six blank sailings are announced for next week, unchanged from this week, which Drewry reads as stable capacity. It says strong US import demand continues to support rates and expects less volatility next week.
Drewry describes the East-West market as rebounding after Golden Week as cargo flows resumed from China.
