China News Service reported from Guangzhou on 16 October 2026 that Guangdong's first green methanol bunkering of a ro-ro vessel was completed that day at the Nansha auto terminal of Guangzhou Port. China Merchants Ro-Ro's newly launched Guangrong took on 2,300 tonnes of methanol, of which 1,400 tonnes was bonded green methanol, then loaded more than 4,000 China-made new energy vehicles for Europe on its first call at Nansha.
The Guangrong is a new-generation large car carrier and the first methanol dual-fuel ro-ro ship to call at the Nansha auto terminal. It is 199.9 metres long and 37.7 metres wide, with a design capacity of 7,800 standard car units. This voyage will call at ports in Spain and Belgium, among others. Guangzhou Port Group said bunkering and vehicle loading ran at the same time during the port stay, and that Guangzhou is now the first port to cover green methanol bunkering for container ships, bulk carriers and car carriers.
Guangzhou's commerce bureau said the city's car exports exceeded 20 billion yuan in January to August, up nearly 60% year on year. According to Guangzhou Port Group, the port's vehicle exports this year could reach its target of 1 million units, with exports through the Nansha auto terminal up 40.9% and volume on the Nansha to Europe route up 2.4 times year on year.
Guangzhou Port Group added that, with ro-ro space in high demand, the commerce bureau is coordinating with shipping lines to open routes and add capacity for the city's vehicle exporters. The port also offers LNG and biofuel bunkering alongside green methanol.
